Role Summary:
The SME Banker will manage and grow a portfolio of enterprise-level Business
Banking clients. This role focuses on building long-term relationships,
delivering consistent operational support, conducting risk assessments, and
driving sustainable portfolio contribution. The position also involves active
business development with both new and existing customers.
Key Responsibilities:
Sales and Relationship Management (70%)
- Conduct annual and interim reviews of customer borrowing facilities
- Grow the portfolio through cross-selling and acquisition of new clients
- Advise business owners and financial managers on credit and financial matters
- Resolve customer complaints and ensure high service standards
- Identify and promote suitable banking products based on client needs
- Coordinate marketing initiatives and relationship management across ABSA Group
- Monitor adherence to risk and service standards
Business Management (25%)
- Research and pursue new business opportunities using prioritization guidelines
- Prepare and assess credit applications, including judgmental inputs
- Monitor portfolio quality using sanction conditions and internal policies
- Manage early warning accounts to mitigate risk
- Ensure compliance with Business Banking procedures and controls
Team Coordination (5%)
- Oversee day-to-day customer management within the branch
- Support consistent service delivery and risk management
Risk and Compliance:
- Act as crisis coordinator during major business unit issues
- Review risk profiles and advise leadership on necessary adjustments
- Maintain awareness of regulatory changes and their business impact
- Complete all mandatory training and adhere to ABSA’s policies and controls
Qualifications and Experience:
- Higher Certificate or Advanced National Certificate in Business, Commerce, or Management Studies (required)
- Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field (preferred)
- Minimum of 2 years in a customer-facing banking role
- Training in risk assessment, negotiation, and communication is advantageous
