Role Summary:
The SME Banker will manage and grow a portfolio of enterprise-level Business Banking clients. This role focuses on building long-term relationships, delivering consistent operational support, conducting risk assessments, and driving sustainable portfolio contribution. The position also involves active business development with both new and existing customers.

Key Responsibilities:

Sales and Relationship Management (70%)

  • Conduct annual and interim reviews of customer borrowing facilities
  • Grow the portfolio through cross-selling and acquisition of new clients
  • Advise business owners and financial managers on credit and financial matters
  • Resolve customer complaints and ensure high service standards
  • Identify and promote suitable banking products based on client needs
  • Coordinate marketing initiatives and relationship management across ABSA Group
  • Monitor adherence to risk and service standards

Business Management (25%)

  • Research and pursue new business opportunities using prioritization guidelines
  • Prepare and assess credit applications, including judgmental inputs
  • Monitor portfolio quality using sanction conditions and internal policies
  • Manage early warning accounts to mitigate risk
  • Ensure compliance with Business Banking procedures and controls

Team Coordination (5%)

  • Oversee day-to-day customer management within the branch
  • Support consistent service delivery and risk management

Risk and Compliance:

  • Act as crisis coordinator during major business unit issues
  • Review risk profiles and advise leadership on necessary adjustments
  • Maintain awareness of regulatory changes and their business impact
  • Complete all mandatory training and adhere to ABSA’s policies and controls

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Higher Certificate or Advanced National Certificate in Business, Commerce, or Management Studies (required)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field (preferred)
  • Minimum of 2 years in a customer-facing banking role
  • Training in risk assessment, negotiation, and communication is advantageous
