Kinondoni Municipal Council (KMC), an autonomous body within the City of Dar es Salaam, was officially established through Government Notice No. 4 of 2000 under the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government. This initiative was part of the broader Local Government Reform Program in Tanzania.
Strategically located, the Municipality is bordered by the Indian Ocean to the northeast, Ilala District to the south, and Ubungo District to the north. It is well-connected through major roads including Morogoro Road, Bagamoyo Road, Kawawa Road, Ally Hassan Mwinyi Road, and Mwai Kibaki Road, ensuring smooth access to other parts of the city and the country.
Administratively, KMC comprises 20 wards and 106 sub-wards, and is represented by two electoral constituencies: Kawe and Kinondoni. The Full Council, which governs the Municipality, consists of 34 members—20 elected ward councillors, 2 Members of Parliament, 6 women appointed through special seats, and 6 Presidential appointees.
