INEC Tanzania: Call for Interview – October 2025

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Tanzania was established under Article 74(1) of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania (1977). Guided by Articles 74(7) and 74(11) of the Constitution and Section 6(1) of the Independent National Electoral Commission Act No. 2 of 2024, INEC operates as an autonomous and impartial body. It independently manages its affairs through formal meetings and is not subject to directives from any government entity or political party.

INEC’s journey toward democratic reform began in 1991 when the late President Ali Hassan Mwinyi appointed a Commission led by the late Chief Justice (Retd) Francis Nyalali. This Commission was tasked with collecting public opinion on whether Tanzania should maintain a single-party system or transition to a multi-party democracy. Following its recommendations, Article 3(1) of the Constitution was amended, officially establishing Tanzania as a multi-party state.

In 2021, a national Stakeholders’ Meeting was convened to evaluate the state of multi-party democracy in Tanzania. The meeting produced key resolutions aimed at strengthening the electoral system. Responding to these recommendations, President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan formed a task force on December 23, 2021, to assess democratic practices and propose reforms to enhance political inclusivity and transparency.
